Some days I don’t know whether I’m coming or going. Time is precious for this mom! We are all so busy yet we find time to break away and go get in a session at the gym. The days I can’t break away and get a quick and effective at-home workout is amazing too. HumanX Gear sent me some of their awesome gear to try out Tabata to see if it would change the way I train. No more excuses for being too busy to work out! Each Tabata workout is only four minutes and 20 seconds!
What exactly is Tabata? Tabata workouts are highly effective interval training fitness routines that follow an “on for 20 seconds, off for 10 seconds” rhythm that maximizes calorie burning for hours after the workout is complete. Tabata offers fitness AND weight loss benefits as well as core strengthening and weight training.
The name Tabata comes from the man who invented it – Dr. Izumi Tabata, a Japanese physician and researcher. He conducted a study using an interval-based training model. His objective was to see if athletes would benefit from a 20/10 session repeated eight times. 20/10 means 20 seconds of all-out exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest. This adds up to four minutes total. – breakingmuscle.com
For my Tabata workout, I followed NSCA-CSCS certified Personal Trainer Jess Allen‘s routine you can do in your living room! Here’s the gear I used:
You should only participate in Tabata if you are physically able to do the workouts without harming your body. Please consult your doctor if you have any injuries or concerns before starting a Tabata routine.

Quick Tabata Workout
1. Jump Rope & Squat Jumps
2. Wide Arm Push-ups
3. Reverse Lunge with PowerAmp Bicep Curl (alternate legs each 20 sec interval)
4. AbX Sit-ups & AbX In-Outs
According to Breaking Muscle, Tabata training will raise your metabolism and heart rate immediately. Since you are performing these exercises at a very high intensity, your body will have to work much harder to keep it up. This will cause your heart to pump fast and your metabolism to jump, which you want if you are planning on losing fat. Your metabolism will stay at that high not only during the workout, but after the workout as well. This means that your body will be burning fat for hours after.
During the quick Tabata workout, my heart rate increased and I broke a sweat. It was the longest four minutes of my life! But I like the amazing “total body” benefits of Tabata and will definitely implement Tabata training into my workout schedule. What isn’t to like? It’s short, fun, and effective. Like Jess Allen says, just remember the “20-seconds-on, 10-seconds-rest” Tabata format!
