A FIT MOM’S LIFE
What started you on your fitness and healthy living journey?
I have been fairly athletic most of my life since about the age of 7. Sports were just a given in my household growing up so I’ve always been active. I played soccer for about 6 years and then in high school moved on to basketball and track. I took a break from most sports in college but later after my first two boys were older, I got back into soccer (indoor, outdoor and co-ed). After my fourth child was born seven years ago, I found myself becoming less and less consistent with any form of exercise or fitness regime and just felt so blah.
About two years ago, my company started an annual internal Corporate Weight Loss Challenge where we were able to workout as teams, getting fit and competing with others for cash prizes. I found it surprisingly fun to workout with my favorite co-workers and we all found ourselves loving our sessions and looking forward to the next day’s workout. It caught me off guard with how much I actually enjoyed not only working out on a daily basis, but also the camaraderie and accountability of it all. I truly believe that’s when the fire for this fitness life hit me. Before I was a casual “workout once or twice a week every two months or so” girl, but after the Challenges started, it became more of a habit.
What challenges do you face as a working mom trying to balance it all? Walk us through a day in your life.
Time. A day in my life consists of either an early morning workout or evening workout. I prefer mornings (in the summer) but finding that the colder and darker mornings of the winter months are my nemesis and evening (pre- or post-) dinner with the family, is better for me.
Either way, I’m usually the first one up and the last one out of the house. Early morning workouts require me to get up about 30 minutes prior to waking the kiddos and I’m usually still in workout clothes as I prepare their breakfasts.
– Workout – generally a HIIT workout because they are fast, intense and effective in the short window of time I have
– Breakfast usually consisting of a green protein smoothie or banana (or whatever eggs or bacon are leftover from what the kids didn’t take) and my lemon/ginger tonic
– Shower/Dress for work while the husband takes the kids to the bus stop or school on his way to work
– Commute an hour into Downtown Dallas area from the ‘burbs (commuting = 1 hour; without traffic the commute would take 20-30 min. Go figure!) –
After work, it’s: home, cook if my husband hasn’t whipped something up, help with homework, and sit with the kids as we eat dinner.
Sometimes I will workout while they eat or I will eat lightly and then workout after they’ve gone to bed. As a working mom and wife to a husband that has his own demanding schedule, it’s difficult to juggle the right time to workout but even if it’s just 10 min in my bathroom before getting in the shower, I try to get SOMETHING in.
What are your favorite workout and exercises? What haven’t you tried but want to?
My favorites are HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) and Tabata workouts. They are PERFECT and so much more effective than spending hours in the gym on cardio equipment or running for hours. Although there are times when I will spend up to an hour working out just because I’m in the mood to do so, I generally spend 30 min or less in intense sessions of 50 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest (HIIT workouts) for anywhere between 12-15 rounds total. You go all out and you go hard and the afterburn is AMAZING! I also enjoy group training at Orange Theory, GOLD’SFIT, or outdoors at Camp Gladiator.
My favorite exercises are usually weighted and consist of man-makers, thrusters, bicycle crunches or Russian twists, and bicep curls or tricep kickbacks. Can you tell I have a hard time picking just a few??

I have never done a real kickboxing class or Title Boxing and I ABSOLUTELY CANNOT WAIT to try them! I’ve never done Tough Mudder or Spartan Race (although I’ve done the Warrior Dash, WipeOut fun run and Jailbreak Mud Run) and want to compete this year either alone or with a friend if I don’t chicken out again!
What are your intentions for 2016?
This year is my year of Exploration and Development. Last year when I started my blog, I wasn’t very consistent with the posting. Although I’ve always been very active on my Facebook and Instagram, the blog was left wanting. This year, I’m planning to have a lot more robust content – fitness, family, articles, etc. – more vlogs and constructing more of my own original workouts.
My other intention this year with AFML is MORE FOOD PREP. Your diet is about 80% of your fitness success and I suck at all the meal prep. This year, I’m hoping to not only beat my sweet tooth (my love of Skittles is legendary around the office) but also my laziness at not preparing meals or snacks in advance. This will be KEY in not only my own fitness goals but also that of my family.
Lastly, I want to attend my first blog conference this year. I’m excited about hearing what others experience, how they manage their content, hurdles faced and how they get over them and generally getting connected to more like-minded and driven moms such as myself. I’ve been inspired by so many already; I really want to get more up close and personal with it all!
Tell us about your blog and what’s on the horizon for you and A Fit Mom’s Life?
A Fit Mom’s Life is my way of chronicling some of my adventures as a working mom trying to live a healthier life (even as I try and try again) as a better example to my family. I didn’t do as well as I’d intended on the blog side of things as I did on the social side so I want to make that more of a priority in 2016, pushing more of the blog content to gain more traction.

I’m intending to share more workout snippettes, more real-time workouts, more inspirational posts and just MORE. This year, I’m refusing to get in my own way and I’m excited to see how much AFML evolves!
